After outlasting the field in the NCAA Tournament’s Midwest Region, No. 2 seed Texas and No. 5 seed Miami will battle in the Elite Eight with the last spot in the Final Four up for grabs. Miami has never been to the Final Four, while the Longhorns haven’t joined the field since 2003, which was their only appearance of college basketball’s modern era.
Texas is riding a seven-game winning streak that includes five double-digit victories, highlighted by a thrashing of Kansas in the regular-season finale before another beatdown of the Jayhawks in the Big 12 Tournament title game. Since then, Texas fended off Colgate, outlasted Penn State and throttled Xavier in NCAA Tournament action to reach this point.
Miami’s last two games have been among its most impressive of the season, though, as the Hurricanes crushed Indiana 85-69 in the second round before throttling No. 1 seed Houston 89-75 in the Sweet 16. With a deep well of talented guards, 73-year-old Miami coach Jim Larranaga is closing in on his first Final Four since he famously led George Mason to that point in 2006.
