“Blew My Mind”: Major Michael Jordan News Hits 57-Year-Old Academy Winner Like a Truck and “Flattered” Her

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s upcoming movie ‘Air’ is set to hit the theatres in a couple of weeks. The excitement amongst fans is palpable. Damon and Affleck’s movie captures Nike’s journey of signing a young rookie named Michael Jordan to the brand and the obstacles that came along with it. While MJ himself isn’t in the movie, he did have a couple of demands for the makers of the film. And upon hearing this news, Academy Award winner Viola Davis recently revealed that she was blown away.

Chicago Bulls legend and arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan signed with Nike back in 1984. But it wasn’t without its drama and ups and downs, as MJ was not keen on signing with Nike initially. However, his mother played a big part in convincing ‘His Airness’ to give a chance to the iconic brand. Considering this, it was safe to assume that MJ’s mother would have a prominent role in the upcoming movie. But that wasn’t the case, as Jordan himself had to step in.

The movie ‘Air’ had a premiere in Austin this Saturday. That is where reporters from ‘People’ magazine had a chance to talk to Viola Davis about playing the role of Jordan’s mother, Deloris, in the movie.

She said, “I’m just hearing about it now. So yeah, so it blew my mind. I’m glad I didn’t know about it before.” Davis also added that she was “flattered” that Michael Jordan himself specifically selected her for the role of her mother. Considering the importance of the role, it is understandable why MJ wanted the legendary actress to portray the role of his mother.

There was another request that Jordan made to the director of the movie, Ben Affleck. ‘His Airness’ requested that Howard White should be included in the movie, given how much he helped MJ not just in terms of basketball but beyond the court as well.

Deloris Jordan getting immortalized once again

Viola Davis is playing the role of Deloris Jordan, the woman responsible for MJ’s signing with Nike. For those of you who do not know, Jordan was not eager to sign with Nike back then, as he had his heart set on the more prominent Adidas.

It was his mother who eventually convinced him to hear out Nike’s proposal. In Michael Jordan’s docuseries, ‘The Last Dance,’ MJ mentioned that it was his mother who said, “‘You’re gonna go listen. You may not like it, but you’re gonna go listen.’ She made me get on that plane and go listen.”
