On Sunday, Sophie Cunningham recorded her 100th career steal against the Dallas Wings. Cunningham now ranks 19th in Mercury history in career steals. There is just a 45-steal gap between 10th and 19th — so Cunningham will surely rise as her career continues.

The 6-foot-1 guard is averaging a career-high 1.3 steals per game. Cunningham, 27, has been with the Mercury for the entirety of her career thus far. Phoenix selected Cunningham with the 13th overall pick in 2019, and she’s steadily gotten better throughout her career.

Cunningham saw a true increase in her role in 2022, finishing third in Most Improved Player voting.

2023 was Cunningham’s only year as a full-time starter. Fast forward a year later, and Phoenix has now upped the star-power on its roster with the additions of Kahleah Copper and Natasha Cloud. Now, Cunningham is seen as a swing starter, and a crucial sixth-woman for a competitive Mercury team. She’s started five games to start this season, and has come off the bench seven times.

Overall, Cunningham has been one of the Mercury’s more relied upon role players since 2022, and could one day be recognized as one of Phoenix’s best role players in franchise history.
