‘Rory to LIV Confirmed’: Golf World Left Furious After Rory McIlroy Set to Be Slapped With a 7-Figure Fine Despite Asserting His Loyalty to the PGA Tour

While he may have been considered a favorite to win the Masters, the spirit of Rory McIlroy has been down since he missed the cut line at Augusta National. As many golfers are gearing up for the RBC Heritage later this week, the Northern Irish star decided to withdraw from the PGA Tour event. Since it’s McIlroy’s second designated event set to be missed, he will pay a gigantic 7-figure amount for his absence.

Though Rory has been the voice of the PGA Tour in the battle against LIV Golf, he would be reconsidering his loyalty towards the Tour with the latest penalty. The designated events have been among the many changes made in the American Tour to outclass the lucrative Tour.

According to the term, 17 events in the PGA Tour season will have more prize money with an average of $20 million expected purses. While the change may have seemed promising for the Tour, McIlroy is paying the high price for avoiding competing in the upcoming RBC Heritage.

With big prize money also comes stubborn regulation. According to elevated events guidelines, all players in the top 20 of the Player Impact Program are supposed to compete in the 17 tournaments. In case of any worst-case scenario, players are allowed to miss one event.

Rory McIlroy, who finished in the runners-up spot behind Tiger Woods in the PIP rankings last year, missed the first elevated event of the year. The Former World number one skipped the Sentry Tournament of Champions since he was preparing for the European Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic.

Nonetheless, with Rory also set to miss the upcoming RBC Heritage, he will face the consequences of the PGA Tour. According to Sports Illustrated, McIlroy will miss $3 million of his Player Impact Program for his absence from this week’s South Carolina tournament. The Northern Irish star is among the biggest names in the sport of golf.

Last year, after finishing at the number two spot, Rory earned $12 million through PIP. Nonetheless, with another fine also expected to be imposed on the golfer, his PIP earnings will also fall down to 7 figures. With such a hefty price paid for missing a golf event, fans weren’t too pleased with the PGA Tour’s actions.

Meanwhile, some other fans criticized the Tour’s designated events.
