By The CommBank Matildas have returned to the top 10 in the FIFA Women’s World Ranking, moving up two spots to tenth after three victories in the Cup of Nations to start the year.
The rankings, released on Friday night (AEDT), saw Australia climb back into the top 10, ranked the top nation in the AFC confederation after Korea DPR was removed from the list; with FIFA’s ranking rules stating “any team that plays no matches for 4 years becomes unranked”.
Tony Gustavsson’s side has won all three games to start the year, taking out the Cup of Nations in the process, with the side going into their next international window off the back of seven consecutive wins. Australia is currently one win away from equalling their record for their longest winning streak, with this set from 20-07-2017 to 28-02-2018.
Australia’s Cup of Nations 2023 opponents saw changes in their ranking, Jamaica (43rd, up one) and Czechia (27th, up one), while Spain remains in 7th.
The CommBank Matildas’ upcoming games against Scotland and England will be the ultimate preparation for the upcoming major tournament on home soil, going toe-to-toe with the reigning UEFA Euro Winners, England, next month in London.
Australia’s opponents for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ have also seen movements in their rankings, with the Republic of Ireland moving up one spot to 22nd. While Nigeria move up three spots to 42nd, and Canada remains ranked 6th in the world.
