Japan Holds Narrow Lead Over Team USA After Day 1
Japan is out in front of Team USA by just 10 points after the first day of competition in Spain. Japan built its lead by putting two wrestlers in the finals and two more in the bronze medal match. Meanwhile, Team USA also has two finalists (Cristelle Rodriguez and Alexis Janiak) but only 1 wrestler in the bronze medal match (Naomi Simon). Check out the full standings after Day 1 below:
Can Team USA Catch Japan?
There’s still a lot of wrestling yet to take place in Spain and that means a lot can change in the team race. All of the medal matches from day 1 are still yet to be wrestled and the remaining 5 weights will begin competition on Thursday. Because Japan is only 10 points ahead, there are various ways Team USA could catch Japan in first. However, with the standard Japan has set, Team USA will likely need another 2-3 finalists on day 2 and will likely need to win 7 total medals. The team race is out to a great start and we’ll continue to update this article at the end of each day with the current standings and a full recap of the team race.
