CICERO — The Fredonia trap team competed in the state championships at Bridgeport Rod & Gun Club on Saturday.

The unfavorable weather conditions, including wind and rain, were challenging to all the schools who attended except Fredonia.

With Hanover Fish & Game Club being Fredonia’s home field, wind was nothing new to this team. Hanover proved to be a challenge for the team during its six-week season, but moving to Bridgeport’s field gave them a distinct advantage.

Individuals are ranked varsity, JV and novice based on season averages.

The varsity squad, including Wyatt Bartoo (85), Daniel Cook (86) Kyle Pierce (88), Mason Tomaszewski (88) and Thane Turo (83) finished with a score of 430 out of 500 to take home fifth place.

The junior varsity squad, including Nathan Balch (86), Olivia Balch (67), Aiden Czekanski (87), Brayden Fabiano (77), Aidan Kinney (82), Ryan Koopman (76), Chelsea Pierce (84), Connor Sullivan (75) and Lexi Wright (49), totaled 416 out of 500 to claim first place. Pierce was awarded second place for individual JV females.

Newcomer Jazz Witkowski, who graduated to a 12-gauge toward the end of the regular season, was Fredonia’s novice shooter. Sporting a BT-99, Witkowski broke 66 birds at his first state competition placing 15th out of 121 shooters.

The team is led by Coach Jerry Kinney.
