Downtown Greenville features in ‘Today’ show fitness segments

Residents of Greenville gathered on a gray morning Feb. 28 to participate in the “Today Show’s” walking Challenge as part of the Start Today workout program.

Start Today focuses on exercise, a nutritional diet and provides monthly challenges for members. February’s monthly challenge theme was good balance.

The show, which aired locally on NBC affiliate WYFF, announced the program would hit the road earlier this month, making Greenville one of its stops along with Hilton Head Island.

The location for the walk was kept hush-hush until the night before the event. The show only revealed its location to participants. A modest crowd met in front of the Grand Bohemian Lodge in downtown Greenville around 8 a.m.

Local residents were excited about the event.

“We’ve been looking forward to it for quite a while,” said Steve Sams, who participated in the event. “We were expecting hundreds of people.” Sams participated with his wife, Kathy Sams, and Philip Watson.

“They told us about it on The Today Show and they sent out the link a little later that day,” Watson said. “I signed up as soon as they sent it out.”

The crowd walked over The Liberty Bridge led by the Today Show health and wellness contributor, Stephanie Mansour.

The crew and Mansour directed the crowd on when to hold up signs and cheer for Greenville throughout the walk before commencing at a finish line in front of Passerelle Bistro
