Throwback Tulsa: LIV Golf sets attendance records one year ago today

One year ago, Broken Arrow’s Cedar Ridge Country Club hosted LIV Golf.

The Saudi-backed professional golf tour was not without controversy,

However, locals showed that even after Southern Hills recently hosted the 2021 Senior PGA Championship and 2022 PGA Championship, a pro golf event is still a major draw: LIV Tulsa had greater attendance figures than any previous LIV event played on U.S. soil, with weekend attendance estimated at 40,000.

Tulsa World sports columnist Bill Haisten wrote of the event, “Nothing about LIV Tulsa was cringe-worthy. I loved the 54-hole format, the shotgun start during the noon hour, the 12 four-man teams and the Club 54, Birdie Shack and Gallery Club hospitality venues.”

In June 2023, the PGA Tour and LIV Golf announced plans for a potential merger agreement.
